Our outlook for the Argentine port sector is rosier than it has been for the last several years. Following years of successive contractions in tonnage and throughput volumes at several of the country's maritime facilities, this year should see a modest return to positive territory. Weaker private consumption will dampen imports while a weaker exchange rate will marginally improve the competitiveness of exports, with knock-on effects for port volumes. However, Arg e ntina's shipping industry continues to struggle with external and internal headwinds such as rising inflation, government intervention, industrial unrest and bureaucratic requirements for businesses.

An uptick in private consumption, helped by more moderate inflation, and a substantial decline in real imports will drive modestly positive real GDP growth in Argentina in 2015. Growth will accelerate beginning in 2016 as fixed capital formation returns to growth on the back of investor optimism towards a new government.

With easing inflationary pressure supporting growth in household incomes, declining real imports and a boost in soy export volumes due to a record harvest, net exports should be bolstered. While this should provide a favourable environment for Argentina's maritime sector, we forecast expansion to remain modest, largely as a result of the many structural issues that continue to weigh on the country.
